HAND BLOCK PRINTING TECHNIQUE

ANCIENT TECHNIQUE OF PRINTING

Hand Block Printing (or printing with wooden blocks) is an old technique used to print patterns on cotton fabric. In this technique firstly design is carved into the wooden blocks with the help of hand tools like chisels and hammers and the seemingly simple act of stamping onto cotton fabric. This ancient technique actually requires a lot of skill, time, and patience. Due to print by hand on soft hand-loomed cotton fabric, there are some imperfections and irregularities that come in character and depth to the prints.

The hand block printing process involves many stages like designing and carving the blocks and preparing the fabric for dye. But once the block has been carved out, and the fabric has been stretched onto the printing table, the pattern is carefully stamped upon the fabric with natural dyes. This is repeated along the fabric; the same process is repeated with each color layer within the pattern.
